Funny: MS FrontPage WYSIWTF

This reflects part of what I think about using MS Frontpage. I remember using FrontPage when I first started learning about building websites. I rapidly gave up on FrontPage in favour of Notepad and then, when I saw the light (UNIX systems), joe and vi. :)

Photography

Image
I recently purchased an EOS 400D from Canon. This was something I had in mind for a long time. To get a camera and learn about photography. I think I got this from my parents that always had good cameras and liked photography. So, I'm initiating myself in this world too. I bought a kit with the EOS 400D body and a 18-55 lens. I was in a hurry because I had planned a day out in Berlengas islands and wanted to take pictures. Unfortunately (or not), the field trip got cancelled due to bad weather and I ended up with a 18-55 lenses that I think I'll never use again. I purchased SIGMA 18-200mm lenses which basically replaces the 18-55 lens functionalities and adds a better zoom. All this without being much bigger or heavier to carry around. I want to avoid carrying a lot of lenses around. Here's one of my first pictures with the camera, still with the original 18-55 lenses, taken on a very clouded afternoon at the westernmost point of the European continent, Cabo da Roca :

Apple acquired CUPS

It seems that Apple acquired CUPS , the Common UNIX Printing System . Every time I get news like this I tremble. A big commercial company acquiring a project licensed under GPL makes me wonder what will change. This is not exactly a philosophical doubt about software licenses. Ok, I think about the license but what concerns me the most is what will happen to the software package I use for free and take for granted. :) I'm also thinking if it will get any better (or worse) since many advocate that software made by commercial companies are generally better. I haven't find any proof for this but the fact is, well paid people usually are more motivated to work better. But some (me) could also say that people that do what they really like and really want to do are even more motivated. Deadlines imposed by marketing departments may make some companies release "unfinished" software. Not properly tested and without every feature the programmer had thought as important for sec...

My new Mighty Mouse

I purchased an Apple Mighty Mouse. I finally gave in to Apple I guess. The mouse just looked so great, goes perfectly with my MacBook and has a lot of good reviews. Ok... Now I have a very good looking mouse. But is it any good? Definitely. Something that easily gets on my nerves is a bad mouse. But this one really makes me happy. Pointing precision is just perfect. I think I never had such a good precision mouse. Off course, like most optical mouses, you have to be careful with the surface you use it on. I had some trouble with a homogeneous table surface but nothing serious. At first, I was afraid that I would have trouble adapting to the right click button. If you don't know, the mouse only has one main button. The whole surface of the mouse is a button. To right click, you must lift the finger at the left of the ball button and press with your finger on the right. To left click, you just press the mouse anywhere as long as you have one finger on the left of the mouse button. I...

Tip for finding high resolution pictures for wallpapers

I don't know about you but I have spent some time in the past looking for high resolution photos for using as wallpapers. I like nature pictures for instance. But that wasn't very easy. I usually didn't find that many pictures with high resolution available (most of them are 1024x768 maximum) and many of them had letters and ads super-imposed. Sometimes I had to go through sites full of pop-up windows and annoying ads. I found a way to search for high resolution pictures much more easily and cleanly. I'm currently looking for lens for my new Canon EOS 400D (post about it soon) and have found that many sites with reviews about photographic lens, also include some samples, pictures taken with the lens in review. Most of them were taken by professional photographers and are really good. The pictures are also, most of the time, with the highest resolution the camera used supports which is pretty big. Here are two small examples: 1 and 2 . Don't publish the pictures y...

Personal finance free eBooks

Being employed in a bank, I have gain interest in finance subjects. Being a normal personal, I also like to have money. Therefore I like to learn everything I can about how to control my finances and increase my wealth. There's an interesting post at the www.mint.com project blog about some free ebooks that can help you with this goals. I have not read any of the ebooks yet but I definitely will. Even though many (if not all) of the books seem to be written for U.S. citizens, I think they all have nice tips and information for everyone. I'm also keeping an eye on the www.mint.com project because they are building a free personal finance web-app. I have used various kind of apps (including by own) for this purpose but all of them had at least one flaw. The most common flaw: difficult to maintain up to date. I wonder if a web-app that I can access wherever I am as long as I have an Internet connection will do it...
